Securing an Externship
The law school has over 30 approved externship placements, covering a broad range of practice areas. If you are interested in doing an externship, this list is a good place to start. Click on the name of the externship for a full course description, which includes a description of the work that is involved, scheduling requirements, and application instructions. It is important that you review the course description carefully before you apply. If you cannot find the type of experience you are looking for among our approved placements, you may secure your own independent externship placement.
How to Apply
Symplicity: For most externships, you are required to submit an application to the externship host much like you would submit an application to a prospective employer. We post these externship opportunities on Symplicity, with instructions on how to apply.
Novasis: There are some Fall and Spring semester externships for which you may apply by registering on Novasis. Students will be selected for these externships based on the order in which they registered on Novasis. The externships for which you are permitted to apply on Novasis are:
- DA Philadelphia
- Defender Association of Philadelphia
- Montgomery County Public Defender
- Villanova Capital Defense Practicum
Judicial Externship Lottery: Each year, more than 30 judges in the Philadelphia area participate in Villanova Law's Judicial Externship Lottery. Students wishing to participate in the lottery must submit an application via Symplicity. The law school matches students with participating judges. The application deadlines are generally as follows:
- Summer: End of February
- Fall: End of April
- Spring: End of September
Specific application deadlines will appear in the Symplicity posting.
Students who do not participate in the lottery, or who participate but are not matched with a judge, may be eligible to receive externship credit for a judicial externship they secure independently. Click here for more information about judicial externships.
How to Enroll
Once you have secured an externship, whether by applying to the externship host, applying through Novasis, or by participating in the judicial externship lottery, you must submit the Externship and Practicum Enrollment Application to be enrolled in the externship. If approved, you should make any necessary adjustments to your course schedule and then contact the Registrar to be enrolled.
