Lone Star Classic

On October 11, 2008, Villanova Law’s Trial Team took first place in the Lone Star Classic, an invitational mock trial tournament  hosted by St. Mary’s University School of Law in San Antonio, Texas. Jen D’Iorio ’10 and Chris Mannion ‘09 defeated the Baylor University Team in the semi-final round and Vince Barbera ’09 and Mike Lyon ‘09defeated the Southern Methodist University team in the finals.  In addition to the team victory, Mike received awards for best summation and best overall speaker.

The 2008 Lone Star Classic involved the trial of a simulated criminal case, State of Lone Star v. Sissy Lockmore.  The State charged Lockmore with the murder of her ex-husband Bill.  The State contended that Lockmore, motivated by a desire to regain custody of her children, traveled from her home in Dallas to her ex-husband's home in San Antonio, where she shot him in the back.  The defense contended that Lockmore was in Dallas from the time she left work on the day before the murder until the time she arrived at work the day of the murder.

Villanova represented the defendant in the final round.  Click here to see the defense closing argument delivered by Michael Lyon ’09.
