VLAA Leadership Nominations

Each year, the Villanova Law Alumni Association seeks candidates for consideration for its leadership board. Self-nominations are encouraged.

About the Leadership

The Association is led by six Officers and a Board of Advisors, which consists of 18 members, as well as the presidents of the VLAA Affiliates (regional chapters and Minority Alumni Society) who serve as ex-officio members. The VLAA Officers and Board of Advisors establish the overall strategic direction for the Alumni Association, and provide advice and counsel to the Dean and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations. The Officers and Advisors also represent the VLAA and the Law School within and outside the Villanova Law community, as well as the diversity of the Association’s membership.

Leadership Responsibilities

The Officers and Board of Advisors meet four times per year, and attendance at these meetings is critical. Board members are also assigned to serve on at least one committee, chaired by an Officer, and to lend their professional expertise as needed. Officers serve one-year terms, and Advisors serve three-year terms. All VLAA leaders should be active members of the organization, not only in the governance and planning activities of the VLAA, but also in the events and programs sponsored by Villanova Law and the VLAA. All VLAA leaders should also seek opportunities to publicize their role in the VLAA and Villanova Law and VLAA activities and programs to their fellow alumni and other appropriate members of the legal and general community.

VLAA Leaders are also encouraged to interact with administrators, faculty, staff, students and alumni to increase their knowledge of the Alumni Association and to advocate for current and future needs and goals.

How to Submit a Candidate for Consideration for an Advisor Position

Each year, the VLAA Nominating Committee appoints six advisor members to the Board for a three-year term commencing in the Association Year following their appointment.

To nominate yourself or another alumnus/a, please submit a letter of interest and resume to:

Sarah N. Ponzio, Esq. '04, Director of Alumni Relations, via email to ponzio@law.villanova.edu or mail to Villanova University School of Law, 299 North Spring Mill Road, Villanova, PA 19085.

Please note that the committee seeks those who have supported alumni involvement through the VLAA or elsewhere in the Law School, regularly participate in the annual giving program and support the Alumni Association's mission. The committee also matches identified needs of the Board with the skills of prospective candidates and strives to create a body that represents the diversity of the Association's membership.

How to Submit a Candidate for Consideration for an Officer Position

Each year, association members are elected by the Board of Advisors to hold the VLAA offices of president-elect, first vice president, second vice president and third vice president.  Each office is a one-year term commencing in the Association Year following the appointment.

The VLAA Officers are elected from among those members who are either nominated by the VLAA Nominating Committee or by a Valid Petition. The VLAA Nominating Committee considers members who are current VLAA officers or advisors, as well as all association members who have submitted petitions. Note that the committee nominates individuals who have demonstrated significant involvement in the Association and the Law School. A person may not be a candidate for more than one office.

Any association member may submit a petition for nomination for an officer position. The petition must meet the following criteria: (1) the petition must include a statement of the office the candidate is seeking, the candidate's qualifications and the ways that the candidate is able to assist the Association in fulfilling its mission; and (2) the petition must be signed by twenty-five (25) members ("Valid Petition"). Petitions for nomination of a candidate to an office must be received by the VLAA Executive Director no later than April 1st.

If the Nominating Committee does not nominate a candidate who has submitted a petition for nomination, the Committee shall advise the individual that he or she has not been nominated by the Committee, and that he or she has the option to run for election before the Board, provided such written request is received by the Executive Director no later than May 1st.

To nominate yourself or another alumnus/a, please submit a petition to:

Sarah N. Ponzio, Esq. '04, Director of Alumni Relations, via email to ponzio@law.villanova.edu or mail to Villanova University School of Law, 299 North Spring Mill Road, Villanova, PA 19085.
