VLS Mourns Dorothy K. Phillips '78



It is with great sadness that we share the loss of a classmate, Dorothy K. Phillips '78.  Phillips passed away on Monday, August 13, 2012 at Saunders House, a long-term care center in Wynnewood, PA.

Phillips, 69, practiced family law in the Philadelphia region for more than 30 years at Dorothy K. Phillips & Associates. She also wrote a monthly column, for the Pennsylvania Law Weekly called, "Domestic Disputes." Her writings on domestic issues such as same-sex custody agreements and parental custody, were also published in Harper'' Bazaar, the Wall Street Journal, the Legal Intelligencer, the Philadelphia Business Journal, Philadelphia Magazine, and The Inquirer. Additionally, Phillips provided commentary on domestic issues for programs on CNN and local TV stations.

Born in Camden, Phillips earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964 and a master's from New York University in 1974. Before earning her law degree from Villanova University School of Law in 1978, she was a marriage counselor, and a therapist in Philadelphia

During her legal career, Phillips was named to the "Top 50 Female Attorneys in Philadelphia" and the "Pennsylvania Super Lawyers."

Phillips is survived by a daughter, Bethann, and son, David, and 4 grandchildren. She also is survived by her former husband, Elliott Schaffzin

A funeral service was held at Main Line Reform Temple, 410 Montgomery Ave., Wynnewood, with interment in Crescent Memorial Park, Pennsauken.
