VLS Alumni to Serve as the 2012-2013 Pennsylvania Bar Association Committee & Section Chairs

On June 7, 2012, Harrisburg announced the names of more than 70 lawyers who will serve as 2012 - 2013 Chairs of Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) committees and sections; 4 of whom are Villanova University School of Law Alumni. The actions of the leaders and members of these groups initiated many of the Association’s policies and positions, prompting the development of state laws viewed as beneficial to the legal system, the courts and the public.

Delaware County


Joseph P. O’Brien , '68, was renamed co-chair of the PBA Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee. This committee investigates complaints against any individuals who are not authorized to practice and are alleged to be performing acts or services constituting the practice of law. O’Brien is a Managing Partner at Kassab Archbold & O’Brien LLC, in Media, PA, representing cases pertaining to Real Estate Tax Assessment Litigation, Income & Estate Taxation and Planning & Real Estate Law

Montgomery County

Mary Cushing Doherty '78, was renamed chair of the PBA Review and Certifying Board. The Board reviews applications from organizations seeking to certify a lawyer’s expertise in a specific field of practice and makes recommendations to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania for accreditation or reaccreditation of certifying organizations. Doherty is a Partner with High Swartz LLP, in Norristown, and concentrates her practice on all aspects of marital dissolution and family law issues. She is an experienced and certified arbitrator and mediator.

Deborah J. Zateeny '77, was named chair of the PBA Charitable Organizations Committee, which focuses on matters of concern to lawyers who are employed by or who represent charitable organizations. Zateeny is a Partner in the law firm of Zateeny Loftus, LLP, and has over 30 years experience as a corporate and tax attorney, focusing on tax-exempt organizations. In addition to universities, health systems, hospitals, private foundations, and organizations devoted to cultural, international and local aid, community development, research, and amateur sports activities, her clients also include non-charitable tax-exempt organizations, including governmental instrumentalities, business leagues and social clubs. Deborah also has frequently lectured on a variety of tax issues at seminars sponsored by the Philadelphia Bar Association, Pennsylvania Bar Institute, Penn State Tax Conference and PICPA Foundation.

Philadelphia County

Marc L. Bogutz '88, was renamed chair of the PBA Professional Liability Committee, which focuses on issues concerning lawyers’ liability case law. Bogutz is a Shareholder with the law firm of Christie Pabarue Mortensen and Young and heads the firm’s Professional Liability Defense Group. His practice areas include defending attorneys (and other professionals), legal ethics, bad faith litigation, insurance law and business and commercial litigation. He is a frequent speaker with county bar associations and individual law firms on malpractice avoidance and ethics issues, and is a former member of one of the Hearing Committees of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Disciplinary Board.
