VLS Alum named Philadelphia Auxiliary Bishop

 

 

Pope Benedict XVI has named Monsignor Michael J. Fitzgerald ’73 as an auxiliary bishop in Philadelphia. Msg. Fitzgerald  is judicial vicar of the Metropolitan Tribunal of Philadelphia which hears requests for marriage annulments and resolves internal matters of church law.  He was the founding director of the archdiocesan Office for Legal Services in 1991.  He was made a monsignor in 2003 and served as vice-rector of St. Charles Seminary from 2004 to 2007. As auxiliary bishop, Msg. Fitzgerald’s responsibilities will include oversight of Catholic education in the five-county Philadelphia archdiocese, its development and information technology, and the vicariates of Bucks County and northern Philadelphia. Cardinal Justin Rigali will consecrate Msg. Fitzgerald on August 6 at the Cathedral Basilica of Sts. Peter and Paul.
