VLS Mourns Alumnus Elkan M. Katz '76


It is with great sadness that we share with you the passing of Elkan M. Katz '76, of Philadelphia, PA. Katz passed away, on Wednesday, October 10, 2012 of pancreatic cancer.

Katz was an attorney at Kohn, Swift and Graf, and a longtime resident of Center City and West Tisbury. He was an enthusiastic biker, biking across Europe for his 50th and 60th birthdays with friends, a ping-pong player, and a follower of progressive politics, writing many published letters to the editor. He enjoyed sitting in Rittenhouse Square, particularly on the bench his family bought him for his 60th birthday.

"If you walk diagonally through the park from 18th & Walnut and take the right side of the diagonal towards the center, I'm the 5th bench on the right side, next to a trash can."

He will be remembered by his longtime friends and family as a kind, humorous, loving and uniquely brave and honorable person who showed constant devotion and love.

Katz is survived by his wife, Linda (Rosenblatt) Katz, and daughter, Rachel (Dave) Darwin, and newly-born granddaughter Lyla Darwin. He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law Dr. Leon D. Katz and Gail Amalia Katz, sisters-in-law Ann Katz Offit (Saul) and Harriet Rosenblatt; brother-in-law Burt (Carole) Rhodes; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lawrence M. Katz and brother-in-law of the late Steven Rosenblatt.

A private interment and memorial service was held in Philadelphia on November 3, 2012 In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Elkan M. Katz Memorial Fund at The Jefferson Foundation, and sent to The Jefferson Foundation, 925 Chestnut St., Suite 110, Philadelphia, PA 19107.
