Villanova Law Appoints James Garvey as Associate Dean

Dean John Y. Gotanda has appointed James C. Garvey, Ed.D., as the Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations, effective October 31.  Dr. Garvey will join Villanova Law from New England College, where he now serves as Vice President for Strategic Priorities and Advancement.   He will bring to Villanova nearly 20 years of experience and success in the advancement field, including having successfully directed a number of comprehensive campaigns exceeding $100 million.

“Jim is an accomplished advancement professional with a clear and consistent record of achievement in development and alumni relations,” said Dean Gotanda.  “We are so fortunate that he is willing to take on this important assignment at this time.  His wealth of experience and proven track record will surely help lead Villanova Law to a new level of success.”

The Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations is a key administrator at Villanova Law, serving on the Dean’s senior management team and leading the advancement efforts for the Law School.  This includes raising the funds needed to support and advance the Law School’s strategic priorities and maintaining and fostering connections among Villanova Law’s approximately 10,000 alumni.

“I am both pleased and proud to be joining Villanova Law and to have the opportunity to work with Dean Gotanda and his team, as well as Vice President Mike O'Neill and University Advancement,” Dr. Garvey said.  “I believe the Law School, with its loyal and accomplished alumni squarely behind it, is poised to do great things."

Prior to joining New England College, Dr. Garvey served as Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations at Philadelphia University, where he oversaw advancement efforts for the university’s six schools, as well as the athletics department and the library.  He also served as Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, and was Director of Development for the William Penn Charter School.

He received his Bachelor of Arts from Connecticut College, his Master of Business Administration from Temple University, and his Doctor of Education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Garvey succeeds Samuel T. McClure, who served as Associate Dean for Development and Alumni Relations since 1992 and most recently led the advancement effort  to help fund the construction of the new law school building.  Mr. McClure retired in May 2011.
