Topic
Sports and Technology: Internet Subs Out Traditional Media
Overview
It has long been apparent that the internet is substantially replacing print media. However, in the realm of sports, the internet has taken even greater strides to supplant traditional forms of media. One way in which this transformation has occurred is through the rapid growth in popularity of weblogs, which are now used to break major news stories or events as they occur. This has created a conflict between First Amendment rights of bloggers and contractual, exclusive dissemination rights held by media corporations.
The internet is also playing an increasing role in the sale of tickets by professional sports teams. Specifically, Major League Baseball recently reached an agreement with StubHub Whereby MLB will permit the sale of tickets on the online site. In exchange, MLB will receive a percentage of ticket sales on StubHub, plus a fee. Because of the freedom that fans have to set the price for the tickets offered on StubHub, this agreement drastically conflicts with the purpose behind anti-scalping laws that presently exist in a number of states. Thus, presently, perhaps more than ever, the future of anti-scalping laws is in limbo.
