The NCAA has charged the University of Miami with “lack of institutional control.” These allegations stem from the conduct of Miami booster, Nevin Shapiro. Shapiro operated a Ponzi scheme, and in 2010 he pled guilty to securities fraud and money laundering. When Shapiro was convicted, he made statements implicating former Miami football players and several basketball players. Miami immediately reported Shapiro’s allegations to the NCAA and also self-imposed the punishment of sitting out of two bowl games. Miami now awaits any sanctions that the NCAA might impose.
