Villanova Students Participating in Fordham Sports Law Competition
Villanova University School of Law Students Russell Crotts, Greg Katz, and Brett Hertel will be competing in the National Basketball Negotiation Competition at Fordham University School of Law in March. The competition will focus on oral negotiation skills related to problems facing NBA personnel. More details about the event can be found here.

2013 Moorad Sports Law Symposium: Concussion Conundrum
Join Moorad Center Director Andrew Brandt on Friday, March 15, from 9 a.m. to noon, as he hosts an in-depth discussion and analysis of one of the most important topics in sports today-concussions.
The 2013 Jeffrey S. Moorad Sports Law Journal Symposium— Concussion Conundrum—explores, debates, and informs on the key issues facing players, teams, leagues, doctors, and lawyers regarding head injuries and brain trauma in sports. Panels will feature former NFL players, national media personalities, NFL representatives, and scholars on the topic.

Villanova’s Fifth Annual Business of Sports Conference
The Villanova School of Business is hosting its fifth annual Business of Sports Conference in the Connelly Center on Wednesday, February 20th, from 5:30 – 8:00 P.M.. The topic of this conference will be “Money Talks: The Economics of Lockouts.” Panelists from many fields will discuss the reasons behind lockouts and their effects on sports. Registration is open to the entire Villanova community.

Meeting of the Villanova Sports and Entertainment Law Society

6th Annual Tulane Baseball Arbitration Competition
Bernie Dennis (3L) and Brett Hertel (2L) competed in Tulane Law School’s National Baseball Arbitration Competition on January 25, 2013. The team won its first hearing before losing to the eventual champions from Pace Law School. The competing students represented either an assigned player or Major League team in salary arbitration hearings. Judges included practicing attorneys, sports agents, Major League management, and ESPN writers.

7th Annual Ivy Sports Symposium at Columbia University
The Moorad Center’s own Andrew Brandt will be one of the speakers at the annual Ivy Sports Symposium this year. The Ivy Sports Symposium is an annual student-run conference that is considered one of the global sports industry’s premier events. The Symposium enables the industry’s leaders and most successful executives to share invaluable knowledge with their peers and potential successors. Sports & Entertainment Law Society 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament
The Sports and Entertainment Law Society is hosting a 3v3 basketball tournament to raise money to sponsor a VLS team at the Tulane Baseball Arbitration Competition. All of the games will take place on Saturday October 27. The tournament is single elimination and the winner will receive a $50 gift card to a local bar of your choice. Registration is $10 for a team. The sign up table will be open from 11:30 to 1:30 in the cafeteria. You may also register by emailing your team to email@example.com.

Rutgers Camden Sports Law Symposium
The Rutgers School of Law–Camden is hosting two moderated discussions focused on the intersecting paths of sports and law during the NBA lockout and the sports betting controversy in New Jersey.
Sponsored by Rutgers–Camden’s Sports and Entertainment Law Society, the second annual Sports Law Symposium will be held Tuesday, Oct. 23 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Referees, Replacements and Resolution: Andrew Brandt Gives an Inside Look at the NFL Dispute with its Officials.
The controversial call that ended the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks incited outcry from diehard fans, casual viewers, and politicians alike, tarnishing the integrity and image of the NFL. Andrew Brandt — Director of the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law, ESPN NFL Business Analyst, and former VP for the Green Bay Packers — offered an in-depth discussion of the NFLRA negotiations and strike. A leading expert on the topic, Mr. Brandt examined the bargaining positions of each side, the length of negotiations, and how the Green Bay/Seattle fiasco was the impetus for the historic CBA that brought the referees back to the gridiron. The Villanova Sports and Entertainment Law Society kicked off the 2012-2013 academic year with its first meeting. In addition to previewing the events scheduled for this year, three guest speakers addressed the large turnout of students and faculty. Andrew Brandt, Director of the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law discussed his background and his vision for the Center. His goals are to make the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law a fulcrum for sports law, thought, media and policy and to make the Center’s website the place to find “everything outside the game.” The meeting also featured two other guest speakers, Vince Nicastro, the Athletic Director for Villanova University, and Michael Siegal, a VLS alum and sports agent. Those who missed the 2012 Villanova Sports and Entertainment Law Journal Symposium, “Moneyball’s Impact on Business and Sports,” can watch a taped webcast of the event. Jeffrey S. Moorad VSL ’81, vice chairman and CEO of the San Diego Padres, headlined the panel alongside Billy Beane, vice president and general manager of the Oakland A’s; Omar Minaya, senior vice president of baseball operations for the Padres; and Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC. Former Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell VSL ’68, a guest sports commentator for Comcast SportsNet and the Philadelphia Daily News, served as moderator.
