Referees, Replacements and Resolution: Andrew Brandt Gives an Inside Look at the NFL Dispute with its Officials

The controversial call that ended the Monday Night Football game between the Green Bay Packers and the Seattle Seahawks incited outcry from diehard fans, casual viewers, and politicians alike, tarnishing the integrity and image of the NFL. Andrew Brandt — Director of the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law, ESPN NFL Business Analyst, and former VP for the Green Bay Packers — offered an in-depth discussion of the NFLRA negotiations and strike. A leading expert on the topic, Mr. Brandt examined the bargaining positions of each side, the length of negotiations, and how the Green Bay/Seattle fiasco was the impetus for the historic CBA that brought the referees back to the gridiron.

Villanova University School of Law (VLS) announced the appointment of Andrew Brandt as Director of the Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for Sports Law. Mr. Brandt brings over 25 years of experience in the sports industry to VLS, having worked as a lawyer, player agent, team executive, television analyst, national columnist, and more throughout his illustrious career. He currently serves as the NFL Business Analyst for ESPN—regularly appearing on Outside the Lines, SportsCenter, and NFL Live and writing a weekly column on espn.com —and is a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business, teaching undergraduate and graduate classes in Negotiations and Sports Law.

In his new position, Mr. Brandt will oversee the activities of the newly-created Jeffrey S. Moorad Center for the Study of Sports Law, advising and collaborating with the VLS faculty on the sports law curriculum and programs at the Law School. He will teach selected courses and seminars, manage speakers series and symposiums, coordinate a sports law internship program, and direct the creation of an innovative website containing a comprehensive online repository of sports law materials and industry news.
